Naomi Akwei-Sturdy, LPCC
Naomi Akwei-Sturdy is an experienced mental health therapist from the United Kingdom, with training and experience working with individuals, couples, and groups. Her therapeutic foundation is rooted in Gestalt therapy, complemented by an integrative approach that incorporates Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing. Naomi believes that therapy should be collaborative, compassionate, and responsive to each client’s individual experiences, strengths, needs, and goals.
Naomi completed her professional training at The Gestalt Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy in London, England, from 2000 to 2003. She earned an MA in Intercultural Group Therapy from the University of London in 2009 and, after relocating to the United States, completed an MSc in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University.
Throughout her career, Naomi has worked with clients experiencing a broad range of mental health and life challenges, including trauma, sexual trauma, abuse, substance use disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, cultural and identity-related concerns, adoption and attachment issues, and borderline personality disorder. She has a particular interest in trauma-informed care and has worked extensively with individuals affected by trauma and substance use.
Naomi brings a culturally responsive, global perspective to her clinical practice. Her experiences have contributed to a deep appreciation for diversity and the ways that culture, identity, race, socioeconomic circumstances, sexuality, and life experiences can influence a person’s mental health and access to care. She welcomes working with people from majority and minority racial groups and values providing an affirming and respectful therapeutic environment for members of the LGBTQ+ community. Naomi believes that every client deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion, regardless of income, social class, culture, race, sexual orientation, or personal circumstances.
